Handbag and Shoe
In this work, I explore the boundary between material culture and illusion by merging photography, sculpture, and digital fabrication. A single shoe and handbag—everyday symbols of identity, desire, and social performance—are first captured in a photograph against a vibrant, colored background. I then remove these objects from the image and replace them with their 3D-rendered counterparts, fabricated and meticulously hand-gilded in 24-karat gold leaf.
This transformation, from photographic trace to sculptural object, speaks to the fluidity of value in both art and commerce. The gold—a material historically tied to wealth, permanence, and sacredness—becomes a surface skin, masking the digitally born forms beneath. These objects are not "real" in the traditional sense, yet they carry the same iconic weight. Their golden surfaces lure the eye, even as they question authenticity and excess.

Rory Fink is a photographic artist based in Melbourne, Australia and has been working in the creative industry since completing a bachelor of arts in fine arts photography in 2002. Rory has exhibited in a number of galleries and has been a finalist in numerous competitions over a decades long career.
